Why Work Overseas?

Working overseas can be lots of fun or a disaster depending, of course, on where you are and what kind of job you get. But there are a few things that can be said about the experience that will apply no matter where you are and what you do

Experience the Local Culture

While tourism is great, there’s nothing quite like settling down and really getting to know a different culture. No matter how un-touristy you try to be, when you see city after city in country after country you’ll get, at best, a skimming off the top of what an area’s true culture is like. Living in one place for a while will give you a glimpse into the daily life of the people. You will make friends there, eat local food, learn to love their weird music and perhaps pick up some of the language.

Personal Growth

I always say that the best way to get to know yourself is to take yourself out of yourself. Take away all the things you are familiar with. Step out of your routines for a while. When you have only your wits and your backpack to keep you afloat, things suddenly become much less complicated. It’s very hard to lie to yourself about who you are when you’re travelling. For good or bad, your true colours will come out and you will grow as a person as well. When you are in an unfamiliar place, everything becomes a challenge and meeting those challenges will give you confidence and a sense of accomplishment. Staying in one place for a while will magnify those benefits. Being able to build a life for yourself far away from anything you are used to is a huge triumph, one many people would never have the courage to even undertake.

life-long memories

Any travel you do is bound to provide you with memories you will cherish forever. In my opinion, however, mixing working and living with travel provides a much richer experience than travel alone. Not only will you have the highlights of your trip, the things you would do as a tourist, but you’ll also have the memories of the friends you made and the new life you lived for a while.
